Our Story
At A Home Within, we understand the transformative power of relationships. Founded in 1994 as the Children's Psychotherapy Project in San Francisco, our organization was born out of a commitment to healing the wounds of complex trauma and ambiguous loss for current and former foster youth. Today, our nationwide network of over 500 volunteer clinicians across 20 chapters in 11 states provides free, weekly, one-to-one therapy to support the healing and resilience of individuals who have experienced foster care.
Our Mission
At the heart of our mission is the creation of lasting, caring relationships between individuals who have experienced foster care and volunteer therapists. We believe that these relationships can provide a sense of stability and support, which is essential for individuals who have often experienced disruption and abandonment in their lives.
Our History
Since our inception, we have grown rapidly to become a leading provider of free, weekly, one-to-one therapy to current and former foster youth. Our founders understood the profound impact that a single, lasting relationship can have on the life of an individual who has experienced foster care. Today, we continue to carry their vision forward, recruiting, training, and supporting a network of licensed therapists who commit to building a relationship with one individual for as long as it takes.
Our Commitment to Diversity
At A Home Within, we celebrate the diversity of our staff, volunteers, clients, and stakeholders on every axis. Our commitment is to fostering the interconnectedness of our community, and we recognize that a culturally responsive approach is essential to serving the needs of diverse communities. Our approach integrates research, clinical practice, and continuing education to shape a field that is both culturally responsive and informed by evidence-based interventions.

Organization and Services
A Home Within is a highly-regarded organization that provides exceptional services to foster youth, with a focus on meeting their mental health needs. The organization is not only active at a local level but also operates on a national scale, demonstrating its commitment to reaching a wider audience.
The organization's approach is unique in that it provides one therapist per former foster youth for as long as they need, offering a sense of continuity and stability that is often lacking in the lives of foster youth.
Therapy and Support
The organization's therapy services are tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual, providing a personalized and supportive environment for foster youth to process their experiences and emotions. The one-to-one therapy ratio ensures that each client receives the attention and care they require, without the constraints of group therapy settings.
National Impact
A Home Within's national presence is noteworthy, as it allows the organization to reach a broader audience and provide services to foster youth across the country. This expanded reach is particularly significant, as it addresses the widespread need for mental health support among foster youth.
