A place to heal. A place to grow.
Elizabeth Hanifin, LCSW, is a dedicated, compassionate, and experienced therapist who has been providing mental health services since 1993. Her private practice is conveniently located in Scotch Plains and Nutley, NJ. Liz's approach is deeply rooted in the Internal Family Systems model by Richard Schwartz, an evidence-based and transformational approach that aims to empower individuals by reconnecting them with their core Self.
Liz's journey in the human services field began in 1993, after graduating from Hamilton College. She started her career as a volunteer at Turning Point Youth Services in Visalia, California, where she worked with chemically dependent teens and their families. This experience not only deepened her understanding of the complexities of addiction but also instilled in her a profound empathy for those struggling with substance abuse.
Upon returning to the East Coast, Liz's work expanded to include school-based youth services and crisis intervention counseling at Hackensack High School. In 1998, she graduated from Hunter College School of Social Work with a specialization in Group work. While at Hunter, she interned at Project Renewal, a men's substance abuse outpatient program in Manhattan's Bowery, and later at Cancer Care Inc., where she facilitated a bereavement group for bereaved partners and led a women's breast and gynecological cancer support group.
Since graduation, Liz has continued to gain valuable experience in mental health and addiction. She worked at the MICA program at Princeton House, in Princeton, NJ, and as Clinical Supervisor at the Passaic Beth Israel partial day hospital program, in Passaic, NJ. Additionally, she furthered her work in oncology at Gilda's Club of North Jersey, where she conducted bereavement and cancer support groups.
In her personal life, Liz is a lover of hot yoga, meditation, chakra and sound healing, 12-step philosophy, and enjoying a good laugh with those closest to her. Her greatest joy and learning experience is being a mother and stepmother to four remarkable children who make the world a better place. Liz is deeply committed to her own ongoing personal therapeutic work and professional training, believing it is part of her responsibility to those she serves. Her steadfast intention is to come from a place of open-heartedness, centeredness, and Self-energy.
Liz's practice is dedicated to helping individuals, couples, and adolescents navigate life's challenges and find balance and harmony within themselves. She offers a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental environment where individuals can explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences without fear of judgment or criticism. Liz believes that everyone has the potential to live a fulfilling and meaningful life, and she is committed to helping her clients unlock their full potential.
